Over the past several years as companies have embarked on large scale IT projects such as Data Warehousing, Custom Application Development, ERP, or CRM solutions, the high rate of failure that has been experienced is now something that holds many back from taking chances that a significant amount of money and time can be wasted before anyone realizes that a wrong course has been taken throughout the life cycle of an IT project. At SCG, we realize that one of the main reasons for many failures is that it can be very difficult to hold everyone accountable in a Project Team. When we say everyone, we mean developers, analysts, users, and executives. This can be a challenge regardless of whether the project is outsourced or kept in-house.
One sure fire way that we have found to significantly mitigate this risk if not completely eliminate it is by choosing the right partner who is willing to take financial responsibility for the work they are delivering, meaning that payments are directly tied to deliverables. This is often a way to separate great IT consulting firms from the average ones. At SCG, while we very often work on an hourly basis, for larger, more complex engagements we prefer to have a more formal arrangement that we call our Fixed-Fee Framework. |
